I like the arts, photographs, old movies, the web, and the city, and tend to wonder how each influences the other. I thought this might be a good place to collect a few of the million images, sounds and ideas I get distracted by every day—sentimental though they may be. Welcome to my corner.

I also started a book club on Tumblr. Join up anytime.

And if you just want to say hi, please do. I write back.

Photo

new reading project. had brunch today with a slow food activist...

new reading project. had brunch today with a slow food activist and old college mate—pollan is like his guru. essentially, food is political, and what we eat and the way we produce it will be the singular thing that changes the course of our civilization, whether we make it or not. on one hand, yes, naturally. on the other, i had never really thought about this much, that the one thing that bonds us all together (eating) is also roughing us up a bit. and then brunch with tod and i’m hearing all about the tyranny of major industrial farms and rapt and feeling like neruda ready to topple la united fruit co. word by word. but first, must read this, gain context, not be such a navel-gazing dunce.

(also: is anyone a real activist anymore? that’s like being a metalsmith, it sounds so backdated. i was excited to hear the word used again, even if the movement isn’t so much burning campuses or squatting in commune houses and is more about perusing the greenmarket on sundays.)

Saw this tonight at Film Forum…eh, not one of his best....

Saw this tonight at Film Forum…eh, not one of his best. It’s ridiculously simple and easy to figure out, but for some reason a recipe validates what is essentially an overpriced naptime snack found in an oft-grumpy Nolita cafe.

She found a way to show a certain emotion, at once accusatory, nervy, furious, a little adolescent, and, as Fuentes says, funny. She is giving the world the finger, whether in The Suicide of Dorothy Hale, where she does it with a masterful complexity, in some of her folk art– like self-portraits of the 1930s, where she can be raw or charming about it, or even in her less spirited self-portraits of the following decade, when illness was getting the better of her. It was an emotion, in any event, that she never quite lost, as it is there in the last words of her diary when she wrote, “I hope the exit is joyful—and I hope never to come back.”] - Sanford Schwartz, New York Review of Books, on the traveling Frida exhibit that just left the Philadelphia Museum of Art and will hit SFMoMA ever so soon.

She totally went for it, and why not?: “It’s obvious that theatre has always had sponsorship. Shakespeare was sponsored by the monarchy. When you read his plays, there’s clearly pandering, because he had to pander to them so that his theatre would survive. There’s no pandering here,” she said.

New thing.

New thing.: I’m helping out with this for a bit, helping D and M get it up and running.

Victoria Hely-Hutchinson, English Boarding School Series

Victoria Hely-Hutchinson, English Boarding School Series
